    • Release of Freedom album, February.
    • Freedom Tour performs in East Berlin, to promote peace, April 5 & 6.

    • A Celebration of "Twenty Years of Music" opens at the Mission Cultural Center in San Francisco, June 6.
    • San Francisco declares June 6, 1987,'Santana Day' in recognition of Santana's worthy public services.
    • Performs in the Mission District, San Francisco, CA., for Carnaval, June 14.
    • Santana headlines the "Interdependence Concert" (The American-Soviet Walk), in Moscow, to promote peace, with the Doobie Brothers, James Taylor, Bonnie Raitt and Soviet Musicians, at Izmajlovo Stadium, July 4.
    • Consulate General of Mexico in San Francisco awards a plaque for Santana's contribution of twenty years of music and fusion of Hispanic roots.
    • Certificate of Honor from the Board of Supervisors of the City and County of San Francisco for public recognition of distinction and merit.
    • Receives Comite Mexicano Civico Patriotico of San Francisco Commendation for spreading the culture and tradition of Mexico to all continents.
    • Release of Blues for Salvador album, October.

    1988
    • Headlines the Blues for Salvador Benefit concert and raises $100,000 for the children of El Salvador. (NEST Foundation) with Jerry Garcia, Bonnie Raitt, Boz Scaggs, Tower of Power, Caribbean All-Stars & NRBQ, January 23.
    • Carlos Santana/Wayne Shorter tour the U.S.A. & Europe.
    • Performs at Montreux Jazz Festival with Wayne Shorter & the Santana/Shorter Band, July 14.
    • Begins the Viva Santana tour along with Michael Shrieve, Gregg Rolie, and Jose "Chepito" Areas of the original Santana Band.
    • Release of Viva Santana! album & video, September 20, 1988.

    • Performs with the band at the 'Earthquake Relief' Benefit Concert in Watsonville, CA., with Los Lobos, November 26.
    • Performs second 'Earthquake Relief' event after being in a car accident on the way to the Cow Palace. An ambulance drove Carlos to the event due to the damage the car sustained in the accident, November 26.
    • Grammy Award for the Best Rock Instrumental Performance for "Blues for Salvador."

    1990

    • Spirits Dancing in the Flesh Tour, April - November.
