A Supernatural Year in Review 

The Year 2000 was an epic year for Santana and all of those involved. The Band kicked off the Millennium with 3 shows at The Hard Rock in Las Vegas, NV & swiftly moved on to a European Tour in mid January. The touring scene was extremely successful with sold out shows around the World and many high profile TV appearances. The 2000 tours found Santana in Europe twice, Japan and the US. On Sunday, February 13, Carlos Santana was honored at the 2000 Bay Area 42nd Grammy Nominees Celebration. The event was held at the Spectrum Gallery in San Francisco, CA. Carlos was presented with the Recording Academy’s President’s Merit Award.

February 23, 2000 Supernatural receives 9 Grammys at the 42nd annual Grammy Awards. The categories included: Record of The Year (Smooth), Album of The Year, Song of The Year (Smooth), Best Pop Collaboration With Vocals (Smooth), Best Pop Instrumental (El Farol) Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group (Put Your Lights On), Best Rock Instrumental (The Calling), Best Rock Album, Best Rock Performance by a Duo or Group With Vocals (Maria Maria).

On April 7 & 8, 2000 filming of “A Supernatural Evening With Santana’” began at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, CA. Many artists from Supernatural were on hand to perform with Carlos and the Band including Dave Matthews, Carter Beauford, Rob Thomas, The Product G & B, Everlast, Lauryn Hill, Ceelo, Sarah McLachlan & Wayne Shorter. The show won an Emmy for Best Editing & the DVD/VHS has been certified Double Platinum. It premiered on FOX and is still available on VHS & DVD.

On September 13, 2000 the first Latin Grammy Awards was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Santana received three Latin Grammys in the following categories: record of The Year (Corazon Espinado), Best Rock instrumental (El Farol) & Best Rock Performance By a Duo or Group With Vocal (Corazon Espinado). Santana performed “Corazon Espinado” with members of Maná.

On October 26, 2000 Carlos was awarded “GQ’s Man of The Year” – Music. Boxing great, Oscar DeLa Hoya accepted the award on Carlos’s behalf.

In mid November the Spanish Amigo Awards were held. Santana once again won awards for Best International Group & Best international Album (“Supernatural”).

On November 30, 2000 Carlos won VH-1’s “Man Of The Year” award. The award ceremony was the first of its kind, with music fans all over the world voting for their favorite artists. “Smooth” also won an award in the “Your Song Kicked Ass but Was Played too Much” category.

On December 5, the 2000 Billboard Awards ceremony was held. Santana won top honors in the following categories: Hot 100 Singles Sales (Maria Maria), Hot Adult Top 40 Singles and Tracks (Smooth), Top Internet Album Sales Artist, Top Internet Album Sales.

In addition to the overall success of Supernatural other Santana albums have reached important milestones in the last year. Shango is certified Gold, The Best of Santana is certified Platinum, Abraxas is certified 5 X’s Platinum and Santana’s Greatest Hits is certified 7 X’s Platinum.
